Gnawa music is a rich North African repertoire of ancient African Islamic spiritual religious songs and rhythms. Its well-preserved heritage combines ritual poetry with traditional music and dancing. It's played by the Gnawa maâllem, or master musician, and their group of musicians and dancers. Its traditional practice is concentrated in Morocco and the Béchar Province in southwestern Algeria.
Mahmoud Guinia (1951–2015) was a famous Moroccan Gnawa musician, singer and guembri player, who was traditionally regarded as a Maâllem who recorded for both domestic and foreign labels, and collaborated with numerous western musicians.
